Dental and Hygiene Appointments
Why are dental check-up visits important?
Regular check-ups with the dentist are important as it allows the dentist to monitor your oral health and also to detect any dental problems early. The dentist will look for evidence of any irregularities to the teeth and gums, such as tooth decay (caries), fractured teeth, infection/abscess, bone loss, oral cancer and also check old restorations. In the long term, regular check-ups will reduce the cost of dental treatment to you and avoid lengthy additional appointments.
What does a dental hygienist do?
Dental hygienist remove hard material (calculus) that attaches itself to the teeth and cannot be removed with normal brushing/flossing. They also give oral advice such as how to brush your teeth, use floss (or interdental brushes) and how to maintain your oral health at home in-between dental cleanings.
Why are dental hygiene appointments important?
Dental hygienist visits are important to maintain healthy gums and a beautiful smile. Plaque (a thin film of bacterial) sticks to the teeth and gums. When the plaque is not removed, it then forms into a hard material (calculus), which cannot be removed with normal brushing/flossing. If calculus is left on the teeth and gums, it causes gum disease (periodontal disease) which will result in bleeding gums, gum recession, bad breath, bone loss and eventual tooth loss.
What is Periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease affects the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth, it causes the gums to become inflamed and sore, gums to bleed during brushing and eventually it can cause the teeth become loose. Periodontal disease cannot be cured but can be controlled with good home care and regular cleanings. Perio disease can also be a co-factor in other medical conditions such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes and problems in pregnancy.
How often will I need to have a hygienist cleaning?
Your dental hygienist will evaluate the condition of your gums and advise how often you will need to have a professional cleaning. Most people will have a 6 month recall if their gums are healthy, or every 2-3 months if there is evidence of gum disease. Regular visits with the hygienist will reduce the chances of gum disease and prevent tooth decay.
